Ryuujin Gorge Kayaking Trip!

Ryujin Gorge is located in Ibaraki Prefectural Okukuji Nature Park, and a big suspension bridge is constructed over the dam lake, which blocks the Ryujin River running through the beautiful V-shaped gorge. The bridge is 375 meters long, the panoramic view and a beautiful landscape of each season at Ryujin Gorge making it a great tourist location.

On top of that, you can bungee jumping off the bridge at the height of 100 meters, the highest in Japan.

In July, the 3 CIRs of Ibaraki went kayaking in the gorge. The tour was led by an experienced guide. We bonded greatly with him, and he told us he moved to Ibaraki from Saitama/Tokyo 2 years ago, he was tired of the city life and wanted to discover a different lifestyle in the mountains of Tokyo's surrounding areas, that are in fact, almost always ignored by people for being so close to the metropolitan city. We had a grand tour that day, although it was mid-summer, the weather was cool and a bit of showering in the afternoon. The air was crisp and humid, but soon we were all sweaty from the paddling. We took a tour in the gorge, and eventually, all jumped into the cooling lake.

The guide offered us free tickets to a local onsen (hot spring), where we also enjoyed great local soba noodles for lunch. After that, we visited the famous Seizanso (Mansion of the Western Mountains), where the 2nd lord of the Mito Clan, Tokugawa Mitsukuni (aka Mito Koumon in popular culture) retired and spent his last years. The place is now a nationally designated cultural heritage site, well managed by the Tokugawa Museum. The well-aged traditional Japanese houses are hidden in the quiet forest, surrounded by blooming flowers, flowing rivers and chipping birds. Away from the noise and dramas of the world, we could almost see Mitsukuni spending his last years watering flowers and enjoying tea on the wooden hallways while admiring this green paradise.

茨城県の竜神大吊橋は茨城県奥久慈自然公園にあり、美しいV字型の渓谷を流れる龍神川からの流水をせき止めたダム湖の上に大きな吊り橋が建てられています。橋の長さは375メートルで、橋の上から眺める龍神渓谷では壮大な景観と美しい景色が楽しめます。 そこで、日本で一番高い100メートルの高さでからのバンジージャンプが楽しめます。 7月に、CIR3人が渓谷でカヤックを行ってきました。カヤックツアーは経験豊富なガイドが先導してくれます。 2年前、埼玉・東京から茨城に移住したという彼は、都会での生活に疲れ、東京の周辺の山々で違ったライフスタイルを見つけたいと思っていました。「ここの自然は首都圏にとても近いことでかえって人々には忘れていますから。」と彼は語っていました。 その日、夏の中頃でしたが、天気は涼しく、午後には少し雨が降っていました。空気はひやりとして湿気があり、すぐにパドリングで汗をかいていました。私たちは湖に飛び込んで涼みました。 ツアーの参加者に、近くにある温泉の無料チケットをプレゼントしてくれたので、そこでのんびり温泉に入って、地元の蕎麦も楽しみました。 その後、水戸藩第2藩主の徳川光圀が隠居した後、晩年を過ごした有名な西山荘を訪れました。その場所は現在徳川博物館によって管理され国指定の史跡です。長い年月に渡って、静かな森には伝統的な日本の家屋がひっそりと建っています。たくさんの花が咲き誇り、川が流れ、鳥たちが愉快にさえずっています。世間の喧騒から離れて、廊下から花を楽しみ、お茶を飲んでいた徳川光圀の様子を想像しているうちに、私たちはこの緑の楽園に憧れていました。
